Chāndrayanam is an austerity program from the treasure trove of yoga that rejuvenates the whole body and mind. This is specifically suggested to individuals, who intend to lose weight without adopting intense practices. The practice of Chāndrayanam propagates the idea of mitahara and meditation practices according to the lunar cycle.
The moon is one of the closest celestial objects and Earth’s natural satellite. Considering its proximity and related factors, since ancient times, it has been believed that the moon has had a significant impact on human beings. It is believed that various phases of the moon affect human emotions, which in turn impact our physical and mental health. The modern world is realizing these facts and is adopting such practices to modify lifestyle issues.
Significance of Austerity Practices
For centuries, monks of various traditions suggested austerity practices as a means of purifying the body. In the second chapter of the Pàtañjala Yoga Sūtra, Patañjali emphasizes the importance of adopting Tapas, or austerity. He says “Kayendriyasiddhih ashuddhikshayat tapasah”, which means that by following proper Tapas, the impurities of the body and senses can be removed.
What we eat becomes part of our body, and it influences our thoughts and emotions. If we consume food that disrupts the natural balance of our body, it will reflect in our mental attitude and behavior, too. By having a balanced diet and practicing austerity, one can purify the body and mind. This is why, Chāndrayanam suggests a limited and balanced diet, Mitahara.
Lunar Cycles and Diet
There are two lunar cycles, full moon to full moon or new moon to new moon. The full moon to full moon phase represents the ‘Pipilika’ or ant. Yogis practicing Chāndrayanam following this phase, begin eating 15 morsels of food and gradually reduce the quantity, finally fasting on the last day. Again, on the 16th day, the food quantity is increased until they consume 15 morsels on the 30th day.
The new moon to new moon phase is represented by ‘Yavam’ or barley. Chāndrayanam during this cycle begins with fasting and steadily increasing the quantity of food until 15 morsels are consumed on the 15th day. Then, from the 16th day onwards, the quantity is again reduced to zero on the final day.
This program includes asanas, breathing techniques, and purification processes suitable to the aspirant’s current lifestyle. The diet is based on one’s eating habits, calorie needs, and mitahara.
